Villages die. Villages live

Like many other villages, the municipality of Bundorf, located in the upper Haßberge mountains, has had to contend with major village decline. Only just under 900 people still live there (as of 2018) and it is one of the most sparsely populated communities in western Germany. A documentary about its scenery, the people and life in the countryside in general.

The municipality of Bundorf is located in the upper Haßberge and is made up of a total of six districts: Bundorf, Kimmelsbach, Neuses, Schweinshaupten, Stöckach and Walchenfeld. Due to a dwindling population, only just under 900 people live there (as of 2018). In the last 50 years, the municipality has lost around 500 inhabitants.

The mayor, Mr. Endres, has been working for years to make the municipality more attractive. Where there used to only be a bakery, there is now also a village store. There is also a drinks market and a restaurant again. A number of vacancies have been eliminated and new residents have been attracted.

I was on site for my photography project in 2014-2015. At that time, there were a number of vacancies, derelict properties and, despite many efforts to create village squares or natural campsites, only a few people were to be seen. Even a soccer club could only be founded with the merger of neighboring villages. Nevertheless, many residents defied demographic change and remain loyal to their home - to this day.
