Würzburg sewage treatment plant

In November 2020, I documented the wastewater treatment plant in Würzburg for the Main-Post daily newspaper. I gained an insight into the entire process of cleaning the water – from coarse to thorough.

From coarse to fine - this describes the process of water reprocessing at the Würzburg wastewater treatment plant quite simply and accurately. Mechanical purification is followed by microbiology, and as soon as all coarse matter such as toilet paper, food waste and other solids have been removed, bacteria are added. All with the overall aim of keeping the River Main clean and doing something for the environment at the same time.

In addition, almost all households in the entire region are connected to the city of Würzburg's drainage system. Around 40,000 cubic meters of water flow through the pipe systems here every day - significantly more in rainy weather. The water is then purified here for around 200,000 residents and ultimately returned to the River Main. The sludge produced in the process is also not simply thrown away, but is instead used to generate electricity in the plant or incinerated externally.
